The Ekiti State Police Command has warned political actors and their supporters against the destruction and defacing of campaign posters and billboards across the state, describing such acts as unlawful and a threat to peaceful elections.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, said the Command had observed with concern the activities of some suspected political party loyalists engaging in the destruction of campaign materials belonging to rival parties.

The Command stressed that such actions violate the Electoral Act and infringe on the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

“It is morally unjustifiable and a punishable offence,” the statement said.

The Police cautioned that anyone found engaging in such acts or any conduct capable of disrupting the peace in the state would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

Political stakeholders were urged to play by the rules and caution their supporters against acts that could undermine the credibility of the electoral process.

The Command also appealed to parents and guardians to discourage their children and wards from being used by unscrupulous politicians to cause unrest.

The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, CP Falade Adegoroye Micheal, called on residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and to promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
