Police Debunk Viral Kidnap Report in Ekiti, Warn Against Fake News
The Ekiti State Police Command has dismissed as false and mischievous a social media report claiming that a bus conveying passengers from Ado-Ekiti was hijacked and all occupants kidnapped along the Aramoko-Ekiti Road on May 31, 2026.
In a statement issued on Monday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Sunday Abutu, the Command said it immediately deployed intelligence and tactical operatives to investigate the report upon receiving the information.
According to the police, investigations revealed that the alarm was entirely false and was deliberately created and circulated by individuals seeking to cause panic among residents and undermine the efforts of security agencies and the state government in maintaining public safety.
The Command expressed concern over what it described as an intentional and coordinated campaign by some individuals to spread false reports of bandit attacks, kidnappings and other security threats across the state.
The police noted that Ekiti State has witnessed several incidents of fake news and false security alarms in recent weeks, describing the trend as unacceptable and condemnable.
While urging residents to disregard the viral report, the Command warned that the creation and dissemination of false information constitute criminal offences and that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police also called on members of the public to remain security conscious, verify information before sharing it, and promptly report emergencies through the Command’s emergency lines.
Residents with credible information about individuals involved in spreading fake news were encouraged to contact the Command through its official communication channels.
The Command reiterated its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state and urged citizens to continue with their lawful activities without fear.
